Weaves are a wonderful thing, if it’s done properly. We start by protective braids underneath the weave. I personally don’t use nets but it’s optional, especially if you are trying to add more hair. When you are wearing a weave, you have to make sure that your natural hair is well taken care of so it can grow out healthy.
When your weave is being installed, it shouldn’t be ridiculously tight but secure. You do not need your hairline pulled to the fullest especially if they are thin or thinning. The hairline is the most sensitive part of your hair especially in African-American women. Hair that is chemically treated can make the hair weak, so we have to keep that in mind. The braid has to be braided small and secure so the weave won’t be bulky, and will ensure a smooth sew-in. Then the hair gets sewn on or underneath the braid, in the style that you like. You can leave hair out or sew the whole thing under. A lacefront closure can also be used to switch up the part to add versality to your style!
The client below wore a weave for about 8 months and you can see the before and after picture of how healthy her hair grew.
Caring for your weave:
If you workout, you should wash your hair at least once a weak. When we have clients come for a shampoo with a weave, our first step is to apply sea breeze on to the scalp. It is massaged and then left in for about 10-15 min. This takes care of any odor, dry scalp and it gets in between the hair of the braids to ensure that it’s clean and sanitizes as well. After this process we shampoo the hair, and then rinse the weave with luke warm water. This ensures for all the oils get removed to ensure a long-lasting style. Last but not least, you'll be placed under a hooded dryer until your hair underneath is dry.
Weave Removals:
In our salon we start the process by using sea breeze. Then, remove the hair and take out the braids and comb out the hair thoroughly to remove excess hair. If it’s not combed out before washing, your hair will lock up and the result will be to cut it off. At this stage, you can relax it w/o applying directly to the scalp, or it gets washed and treated accordingly. Lastly, you can proceed with styling. A sew in weave should be left in your hair for no more than 12 weeks. I had a client who hair locked up after that time and had I had to cut off some of her hair. You are a candidate if you have enough hair to braid.
Happy Weaving!
